about
This carol has an ironic streak, as it keeps mentioning things that break around the house: once something is fixed, another object breaks (with each new verse)... Until one hears the verse where it is said, from the childs perspective, how mother scolded father, underlining how poverty will oftentimes create discordance in a household, hence the maturity of children witnessing everything firsthand.
When everything got fixed, New Year already came.
The caroller singing this would perhaps aim for the host's compassion and expect a good pay for his song: they used to be sweets, fruit, oranges, and very little pocket money.
The white flowers title and chorus is a reminder of early spring flowering trees that sometimes bloom around Christmas.
As a child I used to also sing from door to door, oftentimes together with my sister, we used to make a little fortune around Christmas, as people treasured our singing. They loved it so, that neighbours would open their doors as well... It is a nice memory, to think that one can open doors with a song!
lyrics
Scoală gazdă din pătuţ
Florile dalbe,
Şi ne dă un colăcuţ
Florile, florile dalbe.
Că mămuca n-o făcut
Florile dalbe,
Sâtă rară n-o avut
Florile, florile dalbe.
Pe cand sâtă-o căpătat
Florile dalbe
Covata ni s-o crăpat
Florile, florile dalbe
Când covata o lipit
Florile dalbe
Cuptioru' ni s-o urnit
Florile, florile dalbe
Când cuptioru' o'ntocmit
Florile dalbe
Anul Nou o şi venit
Florile, florile dalbe
Florile, florile dalbe
